Helping young people make informed decisions about their futures.

Active Horizons is a youth-led charity and social hub set up to support young people, their families, and those from disadvantaged background including migrant and refugees.

Through our creative workshops, practical education, and skills training, we offer a safe and stimulating environment for children to flourish, where they can discover new talents and develop existing ones.

Insight from our founder

Yeukai Taruvinga, Founder of Active Horizons

“I believe that everybody has a capability and I find joy in working with young people to discover their talent. To realise what they enjoy, work out what they are good at, so that we can develop them further. Young people often don’t see the potential in themselves. We recognise what they have and work with them to make an opportunity of it.”

Five pillars to achieve our vision.

Our free programmes are designed to guide young people to find their natural talents. We introduce them to cutting edge industries, careers and the latest business skills

Achievement through youth led projects

With our mentoring, children take ownership of their projects by learning how to plan, implement and realise a project from start to finish. This work gives them a sense of achievement and pride.

Community life

We aim to teach children to understand how to navigate community life and how policy can impact their lives. We show how to create a positive conversation with local government to shape the future of the community, how to represent themselves and have a voice.

Cultural identity: feeling positive and empowered

It is important to give children pride in their culture, both from their roots and as British-born children, sharing stories, creativity, and creating empathy as they do.

More than 80% of Active Horizons children come from BME backgrounds, so a big part of our work is supporting them to explore their identity and history. We find this work inspires joy and confidence, encouraging children to be articulate, expressive and assertive, vital preparation for their adult lives.

Growing to helping the community.

We know that families need support in many ways, and in 2020 we are opening a breakfast and after school club for children aged 5 years and up. We hope these services help families to make a living whilst knowing their children are in a safe place that encourages learning.
