Youth participation for change

Active Horizons is a youth-led charitable organisation set up to foster leadership, promote the voice and engagement of BME young people in London.

Our mission

To provide a platform for young people realise the power of their potential, develop their skills and discover new ones whilst engaging with community life.

Our vision

Transforming young people’s lives, inspiring them to be healthy, happy and reach fulfilment. To give them the confidence and skills to be leaders and encourage their independence into adulthood.

Our values

We value young people’s thoughts, opinions, expressions and participation.

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Yeukai Taruvinga

Active Horizons began life when Yeukai realised she had knowledge that could help others. As a political refugee with a prolonged citizenship battle on her hands, no access to education, and no right to work, Yeukai had to defend her rights at every turn to be recognised as ‘legitimate’. She pushed through years of bureaucracy to access information and services in a disjointed and contradictory public service that was unprepared to deal with cases like hers.

She eventually realised that everything she had learned could (and should) be shared to help those without the means to change their situations. And here began Active Horizons, originally set up for a small group of children to get access to extracurricular activities, but which now serves up to 50 Bexley children. Each one benefits from the skill building programmes which nurture independence and creativity to help youngsters navigate and flourish in their adult lives.

Our partners

In order to achieve our goal of offering transforming and well-grounded solutions to the needs of young people, we work in partnership with community members, local agencies and the government. We are grateful for the partnership with Orbit, who provides space for us in their community hub in Erith park, many of whose residents can benefit from our workshops.

Furthermore, we thank our funders for their long-standing funding support. This support helps us to make our work and achievements possible.
